About

During my time at Dundee University I focused on certain elements of architecture which I found very useful in how I approach design. The first of these came in my first year when I studied the neo-classical architecture of Castle Coole in Co Fermanagh. This gave me my first principles in looking at symmetry, scale, proportion and how these combine to give the building a character. The second element was the study of the Golden ratio, and with it looking at the ‘modulor’ which was conceived by Le Corbusier. Le Corbusier’s study of the vitruvian man was the basis of the ‘modulor’ and it centred around the mathematical proportions of the body. Studies were done to show that people were more drawn to shapes based on the golden ratio when compared with non ratio based shapes. The final element was in my 4th year when I wrote an essay on Andrea Palladio who also contributed to writings on Vitruvius and through his buildings showed an order to his design with the principles of Vitruvius and other Renaissance movements.

In my Masters year at university I had the opportunity to work with Professor Kathryn Findlay of Ushida Findlay Architects on a proposal for the London 2012 Olympics. I worked along with another student on ‘The Hill’ which was to be an Arts and Cultural Centre for the olympics. As the name suggests it took a very free form of a hill which enclosed four ‘journeys’ through the building which were structured through a lattice of Catenary Arches. Although this project is very adventurous I feel it shows my adaptability in design and my ability to work as part of a team on a large scale project. The project can be seen on Ushida Findlays website and I was also credited for it in ‘Architectural Design’ Pg35 May/ June 2013 Edition.

Since finishing my Masters of Architecture in June 2007 at Dundee University I have worked with Studiorogers for three years and practised by myself for a further five years. I am eager and keen at this early stage of my career to work hard individually and corporately to achieve quality and aesthetically pleasing projects.

I achieved my Part 3 professional qualification at Queens University, Belfast in December 2009. Since achieving my professional qualification I have been continually pushing myself to gain more experience and knowledge of the design process. In Studiorogers I worked as part of a team responding to emerging issues of sustainability within the office so that we could meet the requirements and aspirations of our clients as well as continuing to push the boundaries of the profession. I was also involved in the team which attained the Quality Assurance and Environmental Accreditation of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and during this time I was trained as an internal auditor.
